Robert Gibbs, who played a key role in the election campaign of president-elect Barack Obama, will be the administration’s press secretary.
If true - our report from yesterday saying that Rahm Emanuel was reported to have accepted the job of Chief of Staff was denied later by Emanuel himself yet today the news came that he did indeed accept the offer, albeit not yesterday but today - this would once again be an indication that Obama’s administration may be less bipartisan, moderate, civil and honest than many moderates and centrists hoped.
Gibbs has, according to some, the reputation of a partisan hack, willing to do and say everything, as long as he and / or his boss win(s).
Reporters, most of whom were and still are passionately pro-Obama, will have less trouble with the announcement, however. The highly partisan and pro-Obama Politico, summarized the expected reaction of reporters as follows: “the announcement is likely to be viewed favorably by reporters because Gibbs has unquestioned authority, access and institutional memory.”
Whatever can be said about Gibbs, he is a ‘loyal’ Obama partisan above all. Although such people are certainly handy, one wonders whether Obama could not have asked a television personality with an image of moderation to be his press secretary, much like George W. Bush did with Tony Snow (a great press secretary indeed).
