I can't help but wonder what the supporters of quick withdrawal from Iraq think about the latest attack on civilians. Sure, politicians say what they have to in order to win votes. But how do they sleep at night?
"Al Qaeda fanatics plumbed sickening new depths yesterday when they turned two women with Down's syndrome into human bombs to kill 70 people in Baghdad," reports the London Daily Mail. "The unwitting pawns were apparently fooled into wearing explosive vests which were then detonated remotely by mobile phones as the women mingled with crowds."
Hillary Clinton has promised that she would begin withdrawal of U.S. troops the first 60 days of her presidency. Obama's official site say he will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months.
Meanwhile, Reuters updates the story: "The death toll from Friday's suspected al Qaeda bombings on two popular pet markets in Baghdad has risen to 99, police said on Saturday, making it the deadliest day in the capital since last April."
Barack Obama tells his audiences, "We want an end to this war!" But he hasn't explained how he plans to persuade the terrorists to stop attacking civilians.
Politicians sometimes don't comprehend what kind of killers we're dealing with. "They have shown their true demonic character," said Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Stover, a U.S. military spokesman conveyed the sense of outrage over the depravity of the masterminds. Terrorists likely chose women who can avoid thorough searches at checkpoints because of Islamic sensitivities, and four have carried out suicide bombings since November.
Major-General Qassim Moussawi, spokesman for the Iraqi military in Baghdad, said the suicide bombs were detonated remotely by mobile telephones. "We found the mobiles used to detonate the women," he said, adding that the women had mental disabilities. He did not elaborate on how the Iraqi military knew about their mental condition.
Hillary Clinton and others say Iraqis must accept responsiblity for securing the country. Sounds good here, but it doesn't resonate the same way with the people whose protectors, the Iraqi forces, were disbanded by the American Paul Bremer.
Rabaa Hussein, a Baghdad resident, said, “If the Americans withdraw it will definitely affect things,” he added. “It would be a disaster for Iraq.”
Guess it's easier for the politicians to apologize later. You know, the way Bill Clinton apologized for sitting back and watching the killings in Rwanda while he was in the White House.
Most of us can understand on some level why terrorists don't have a conscience. They're murderers. Any sense of what's right and wrong would prevent them from doing their jobs. Please don't tell me to vote for the presidential candidates who look the other way in order to do their jobs.
